A valle delle consultazioni delle ultime 2 settimane con i nostri followers, abbiamo selezionato i 15 membri del gotha dei Seattle Supersonics, arrivando a definire i 3 migliori quintetti all-time. Alcune scelte sono state particolarmente sofferte, dovendo far fronte alla sovrabbondanza di ottimi performer in alcuni ruoli (leggasi Shooting Guard e Power Forward). Per non mietere vittime eccellenti abbiamo fatto uso della flessibilità consentitaci dai doppi ruoli, ma alla fine dei giochi siamo soddisfatti dei quintetti selezionati. Uno speciale ringraziamento ai competenti membri del gruppo facebook “The History of the Seattle SuperSonics (1967-2008)” per i loro contributi sempre illuminanti e pertinenti. POINT GUARD
- Gus Williams : “The Wizard” è stato forse il più eccitante giocatore della storia dei Sonics. Membro chiave della squadra che ha vinto il titolo NBA nel 1979, Gus Williams ha segnato oltre 20 punti a partita in 3 delle sue 4 stagioni ai Sonics guadagnandosi 2 convocazioni all’ASG.
SHOOTING GUARD
– Dennis Johnson : Tremendo difensore in grado di elevare il suo rendimento nelle grandi occasioni. MVP delle 1979 Finals. 2 volte All-Star e all-defensive first-team durante le sue 4 stagioni a Seattle.
SMALL FORWARD
– Xavier McDaniel : Uno dei più grandi intimidatori della sua era, “X-Man” forniva atletismo, forza bruta, scoring e rimbalzi offensivi a volontà. Ha trascorso 6 anni della sua carriera a Seattle finendo nella top 10 di punti, rimbalzi e recuperi.
POWER FORWARD
– Spencer Hayywood : Ha cambiato le regole della NBA quando ha lasciato la ABA per approdare ai Sonics senza passare per il draft (underclassman rule). Hall of Famer, Haywood ha giocato a Seattle dal 1970 al 1975, conquistando 4 selezioni All-Star. I suoi record individuali di 29.2 punti e 13.4 rimbalzi a partita restano record assoluto di franchigia. E’ uno dei soli 3 Sonics ad essere stato insignito del primo quintetto NBA.
CENTER
– Sam Perkins : Soprannominato affettuosamente “Big Smooth,” Perkins è stato un antesignano dello “stretch 5”, per lo meno nella NBA. Giocatore molto astuto, abile nello sfruttare i mismatch generati dal suo gioco perimetrale a quell tempo piuttosto atipico, e in grado di colpire nel crunch time, Perkins ha contribuito a raggiungere i play-off durante tutti i 6 anni di permanenza a Seattle.
After the intensive consultations of the last 2 weeks, we selected the 15 members of the Seattle Supersonics Gotha, defining 3 All Time Best Sonics Starting Five. Some choices were particularly difficult, having to cope with the overabundance of excellent performers among Shooting Guard and Power Forward. In order not to rule out a couple of players who received lot of votes from our followers, we used of the flexibility allowed by the double roles, but at the end of the game we are satisfied with the selected starting five.Special thanks to the competent members of the facebook group “The History of the Seattle SuperSonics (1967-2008)” for their always enlightening and consistent contributions!Enough small talk, it’s time to reveal our picks for the 2nd Best Sonics Team ever!
POINT GUARD
- Gus Williams : “The Wizard” was perhaps the most exciting player in Supersonic history. Key member of the 1979 championship squad, Gus Williams averaged over 20 points per game in three of his seasons with the Sonics. Two-time All-Star with Sonics.
SHOOTING GUARD
– Dennis Johnson : Terrific defender who elevated his game in must-win situation. MVP of the 1979 Finals. Two-time All-Star and all-defensive first-team selection during his 4 years in Seattle.
SMALL FORWARD
– Xavier McDaniel : One of the baddest player of his era, the “X-Man” provided athleticism, brute strength, scoring and offensive rebounding. McDaniel spent six seasons in Seattle, and finished in the top 10 in both points and rebounds, as well as steals.
POWER FORWARD
– Spencer Hayywood : Changed the NBA rules when he left the ABA for the Sonics without entering the draft. A Hall of Famer, Haywood spent 5 seasons with the Sonics from 1970-1975, gaining four-time All-Star selection. His season marks of 29.2 points, 13.4 rebounds are franchise records. He remains one of only three Sonics to make first team all-NBA.
CENTER
– Sam Perkins : Dubbed “Big Smooth,” Perkins was a forerunner of the NBA stretch five. Clever player who held the court in the crunch time, Perkins helped the Sonics to reach six playoff berths in his six years at Seattle.
